Digitization of the library collection and documents of the institutions of the Central Bohemian Region

The Central Bohemian Scientific Library in Kladno was originally founded in 1897 as a federal library called the People’s Library in Kladno. Its seat is the former District House from 1910 – a building monument, which after a recent reconstruction of the interior provides space for modern library and information services and a pleasant environment for visitors. The library’s collection is universal, consisting of books, magazines, newspapers, maps, sound media and other documents, mainly of Czech provenance, and occasionally also foreign-language literature published abroad. At present, the library collection contains over 720 thousand library units.

Challenge

Develop a project for scanning and digitization of library collection and documents related to the Central Bohemia Region, including processing of metadata and bibliographic data according to the standards of the National Library.

Solution

In 2013 and 2014 we cooperated as a subcontractor with Konica Minolta Business Solutions Czech, spol. s r.o. on the project Delivery of digitization services for library collections and documents related to the Central Bohemia Region.

Digitization of the library collection was carried out in our DigiCentre on 4DigitalBooks book scanners (robotic DL-MINI-I, semi-automatic Scan2Page) and ColorTrac scanner (Smart Lf). Metadata and bibliographic data were processed according to National Library standards. Scanning of documents was performed on Kodak Alaris document scanners.

Benefits

The digitized library collection is available to visitors of the Central Bohemian Research Library in Kladno through the Kramerius digital library. All digitized data are stored in the regional digital unit of the Central Bohemia Region.

Building archive digitization

The town was founded in the 14th century by Charles IV. According to legend, the emperor had it built soon after the accidental discovery of thermal springs by his hunting party. The spa enjoyed the favour of many noble families and wealthy townspeople as early as the 16th century. Due to several natural disasters, only a few buildings from this period have survived. Most of the architectural monuments date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when the town experienced a “period of plenty”.

Challenge

Develop a project for the digitization of the archive, which included documentation of different ages, quality, formats, weights and media. Approximately a quarter of it was from the period before World War II.

Solution

In 2012 and 2013 we participated in the project Ensuring data and information transfer in the territory of the Statutory City of Karlovy Vary. In order to minimize the risk of loss or damage of documents, we performed digitization directly at the customer’s premises. Scanning of the text part was performed on Kodak Alaris scanners with A3 flatbed and Kodak Capture Pro application, scanning of the drawing part on Contex large format scanners. For indexing we used our own application ScanIndex.

Benefits

By the end of 2013, we had processed the entire archive, which contained 4.4 million A4 pages. The archive is now accessible electronically to the wider public, facilitating the retrieval of documents for construction proceedings. The archive also provided important information for the inscription of the historical part of Karlovy Vary on the UNESCO list of monuments.

Bauer Media v.o.s.

Media Group Mafra | Archive digitization

Bauer Media v. o. s. is a Czech publishing house owned by the German company Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG. In autumn 2018, most of its activities were acquired by the media house MAFRA. The publishing house produced a wide range of social magazines, while its subsidiary Bauer Media Prague focused on lifestyle titles.

Challenge

To develop a project to digitize the magazine archive (the predecessor of the current Television Weekly), to unify the output sizes of the individual formats and to maintain a graphic resolution that will allow immediate use in graphic preparation for print.

Solution

We used powerful Kodak Alaris document scanners and Epson graphic scanners to digitize paper photographs, magazine covers and slide and negative photo materials.

Benefits

The outcome of the entire project was a new digital archive of various types of image templates (photographs, slides, negatives) and paper documents (programmes, invitations, postcards, magazine covers, photographs from cinema signboards) and a sorted and clearly labelled archive of original materials.

Library collection digitization for memory institutions

In order to save, preserve and make available important documents from the book collections that are related to the history and culture of the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Region implemented the project Digitization and data storage (E-Government of the Moravian-Silesian Region II. – VI. part of the call), within the framework of which important documents related to the Moravian-Silesian Region, especially to its history, culture, economy, etc. were digitized in the period 10/2012 – 10/2013.

Challenge

Develop a project for the digitization of historical documents, books and archives, including the processing of metadata and bibliographic data according to the standards of the National Library.

Solution

In 2012 and 2013, we participated as a subcontractor of Konica Minolta Business Solutions Czech, spol. s r.o. in the public contract “Digitization of the library collection of memory institutions of the Moravian-Silesian Region”.

Digitization of the library collection in the scope of 306 000 pages was carried out in our DigiCentre on 4DigitalBooks book scanners (robotic DL-MINI-I, semi-automatic Scan2Page) and processing of metadata and bibliographic data according to the standards of the National Library in the Scan4Book application, which we developed in cooperation with AiP Safe.

Benefits

The digitized collection is available to visitors of the Moravian-Silesian Research Library in Ostrava through the Kramerius digital library.

Municipal district of Prague 2

Building archive digitization

The Prague 2 municipal district includes within its boundaries part of Nové Město, Vyšehrad, part of Královské Vinohrady and part of Nusle. The creation of this unit occurred during the administrative division of the Prague territory into 10 districts in 1960. This reorganization broke up traditional urban districts into sometimes up to four or five new districts and broke numerous historical ties. The history of the territory that Prague 2 occupies goes deep into the Czech past.

Challenge

Develop a project for the digitization of the archive, which included documentation of buildings, linear structures, parks and the Vyšehrad area. The text and drawing part included documents from the 19th century to the present.

Solution

In 2010, we provided the Prague 2 Municipal Office with a solution for the project “Digitization of the building archive”. In order to minimize the risk of loss or damage of documents, we carried out the digitization directly at the customer’s premises. Scanning of the text part was done on Kodak Alaris scanners with A3 flatbed and Kodak Capture Pro application, scanning of the drawing part was done on Contex large format scanner. For indexing we used our own application ScanIndex. At the same time as the digitization of the archive we also processed the newly created documentation.

By the end of 2013, we had processed the entire archive, which contained 1.6 million A4 pages. The archive is now accessible to the wider public and facilitates the retrieval of documents for construction proceedings.
